The Afrikan Konciousness Koalition
Address: Moncks Corner, SC
29461
Short Business Description: We organize to empower, liberate, and heal the African American/Black community.
Long Business Description:

In 2015, our lives changed along with the families of the Charleston Emanuel AME 9 Murdered. That’s when my family and I started questioning, what’s sacred anymore within the Black or African American Community? The church seemed to be untouchable & sacred until then. Therefore, if the cornerstone of our communities is so disrespected than what are we missing? This is where The Afrikan Konciousness Koalition was formed.

We’ve hosted lectures bringing in some highly respected people to the Lowcountry to enlighten us & things to help us learn our rich history, like Derrick Grace and Young Pharoah plus more. We also host The Annual Afrikan Festival to reach the youth in a fun way to teach on our diaspora, bring local businesses together to reach the community letting them know they exist to keep money flowing in our own areas, and encourage more community engagement and solidarity. Proceeds from the festival benefits a local nonprofit of Berkeley County.

Mission
Vision Statement: Every Child Wins
Mission Statement:
The Lowcountry Youth Service mission is to create and implement programming that will give youth the tools they need to thrive in life.
History
Lowcountry Youth Services have been serving the tri-county area since 2008 when it was founded as Connections and You, Inc. Ricardo Perry, in the city of Hanahan, South Carolina. The initial idea of the organization was to establish the Bennie Warren home for boys in the Charleston area. This home would house young men who were considered runaways or who were apart of the DSS or DJJ system. These young men would be surrounded by positive and influential adults who would have a consistent impact on their lives daily. Due to the many challenges in bringing them home to reality and the immediate need for a positive impact on the young men in the community, the Distinguished Gentlemen’s Club (DGC) was born. DGC would share the concept, as the Bennie Warren Home for boys, except this would be done in communities.

On April 10, 2010, the DGC held its first meeting with only 12 young men, who were all from the Tri-County area at the Danny Jones gym in North Charleston, Sc. In April of 2013, the DGC branched off into two chapters, DGC Hanahan and DGC North Charleston, because of the extreme amount of growth the program had gone through in just a few years. In June of 2013, the DGC incorporated its first executive board among the members. These young men would be charged with the continued leadership among the brothers. Over the next few years, the DGC would continue to experience massive growth as the need for young men being mentored continue to grow. In May of 2016, DGC Summerville began as another chapter of the program. In July 2017, the Distinguished Gentlemen’s Club became its own non-profit tax-exempt organization. All three branches merged into one program in May of 2017.

To date, The Distinguished Gentlemen’s Club has over 100 members, with a constant growing list of young men who want to join our program. DGC has served over 300 boys since its inception. In December of 2018, DGC rebranded and has become Lowcountry Youth Services, where the mission is to create and implement programming that will give youth the tools they need to thrive in life.

DGC has been featured in the Post and Courier several times, the Hanahan Gazette, Summerville Journal Scene, Channel 4 and Channel 5 News. The DGC has been the recipient of the Marlon Kimpson, Give Back to the Community Grant, twice, and has received numerous awards from Local governments and organizations.
